Breite Reserve: a natural paradise?

The town of Sighişoara is unique in Europe as it contains an inhabited medieval citadel. However, the impressive cultural heritage and history are not the only distinctive values of this town. The natural heritage surrounding the town soon got the attention of reputed scientists of national and international level, and of numerous institutions, state organizations and NGOs from Romania and abroad.

This is no coincidence: close to Sighişoara lies a cultural and natural monument that is unique in this part of Europe. The Ancient Breite Oak Tree Reserve is a special attraction point for visitors from Europe and other continents, as it contains the largest collection of ancient oaks in Central and Eastern Europe.

The culturally modified forest on the Breite plateau

Breite is a wide, open plateau (“Breite” means “width” in German) that covers a surface of 133 hectares and is surrounded by natural forest. Breite is a culturally modified forest, resulted from human intervention and bearing the print of the Saxon civilization established here in the 12th century. Existing documents suggest that the first habitats of this type were created in this region by the Hungarian population (the Hungarian term for this type of forest is “legelo erdo”), and that they were maintained and extended by the Saxon communities.

The wood pasture on the Breite plateau was created through the reduction of the natural forest. The distance between oaks was established so as to ensure maximum fructification, the acorns being used as food for both people and their animals. Recent observations indicate the presence of similar wood pastures in the vicinity of some Saxon villages from the Tarnava Mare Valley (Viscri, Meşendorf, Stejăreni). The acorn and wood provided by these wood pastures were more expensive than those obtained from the “ordinary” forests. Historic evidence shows that oak wood from Breite was used for building Saxon houses in Sighişoara.
